What is "Breeder's Choice Sires"?

Michigan Jersey breeders, while small in number, have always been keen on multiple trait selection.   As a result, they seek out bulls who maintain Jersey test% while adding to milk volume; they like their type to "show" as well as score; and they prefer cows who last a full functional lifetime.   In 1998, Bruce Rendon (Renmoor Jerseys) talked Greg Palen (Netherhall Jerseys) into starting "Breeder's Choice Sires" as a way for the Jersey breeder to access the herdsires of many leading Canadian breeders.   Since then, with the increasing appreciation of the "Canadian kind" and the need for pedigree and trait outcross sires in the USA, the program has expanded to include USA-bred sires from the deeper cow families and the overlooked bloodlines.   Breeders interested in market access will store an inventory of semen on consignment at "Breeders Choice"s central storage; Breeders wishing to use such bulls find an interesting variety available from a single source.   Delivery is by UPS shipment, in vapor-phase shippers.   In addition, a few independent AI Reps knowledgable in Jerseys offer some of these sires locally.
